TOP 5 PLACES FOR A RUSSIAN WINTER EXPERIENCE

It is well-known that people usually choose to travel during spring, summer, and autumn.

If someone told you not to visit Russia during the winter because the whole territory is a great Siberia, then let me tell you that Russia is MARVELOUS in the winter.

Here you have the top 5 cities that you can't miss while you travel in Russia in cold weather

Moscow

Even as a multicultural capital, Moscow is keeping Russian traditions alive.

The Russian Winter Festival is represented by the ice sculptures in Red Square, traditional food, music, and dance. Do not miss the painting and sled racing in Sokolniki Park or a snowman-building contest on Arbat Street.

The Winter Festival takes place from mid-December to mid-January. Make sure to spot Ded Moroz (Father Frost)- picture below.

 Salekhard

Salekhard is based in the center of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The distance from the city to the Polar Circle is around 1 km. The city is quite small with a population of 40,000 people.

Salekhard is famous for the nomadic people, called Khants and Nenets that prefer to live in the tundra along with their flock of reindeer.

Their winter lasts from November until April and the temperatures can drop up to -60C and it is very windy.

You can get there by plane or by train and note that apart from your Russian visa you will need a Yamal permit as well.

For sure, this is a place that you can't miss during winter while you are in Russia.

 Krasnoyarsk

During winter, Krasnoyarsk is famous for ''The Magical Ice of Siberia'', which represents a festival of snow and ice sculptures. The festival takes place from the 13th to the 18th of January.

The 25 teams that participated last year are from the United States of America, China, Japan, Latvia, and Russia. They are divided into two categories: snow and ice. The winners are chosen by a jury and of course, by the public vote.

Irkutsk- Lake Baikal

Being at Lake Baikal during the winter is like you are in a fairyland.

Get the chance to have a wooden homestay as accommodation.

Experience the proper winter with a ''Troika'' journey. A ''troika'' is a Russian carriage drawn by three horses. They can reach a speed of 45-50km per hour. It is worth trying for a ride in the forest while the ring of the bell announces you are comfortable.

Also, Siberia is the perfect place for a husky sleigh ride. Usually, you have the option for 5km or 10km.
